KSPEK

About

Hi, I'm Kathleen van der Spek and Kspek is my collection of one-of-a-kind, handmade items crafted from repurposed and eco-conscious natural fabrics. This collection is the culmination of my deep love for sewing, fashion design, and our planet.

From an early age, I learned to sew alongside my mother and grandmother, turning scraps into something new with ease. Sewing quickly became a part of who I am. As a teenager, creating my own clothes was my way of expressing creativity and gaining new outfits. My family believed in thrifting, "hand me downs," "less is more," and "quality over quantity"—principles I hold dear to this day.

Love of Fashion

My passion for fashion led me to study clothing design at Ball State University, where I earned a bachelor's degree in fashion design and marketing. I later worked in New York, Seattle, and San Francisco, designing for corporate fashion companies. During that time, I had the incredible opportunity to travel and work directly with factories in China and Hong Kong, learning the ins and outs of mass production. While this experience developed me as a designer, I felt conflicted about the waste and consumption I was a part of. In 2010 I made the decision to leave the corporate world to launch my own line, the Kathleen van der Spek Collection, which was produced in small, local factories in San Francisco. After 10 years of having my own fashion collection, I moved back to Washington and found myself in Gig Harbor, with my husband and young children. Fashion was still calling to me, but opportunities in my charming new town were scarce. That’s when the Kspek collection truly began to take shape, drawing from all my experiences, values, life style and creativity.

Beautiful Materials

Kspek focuses on using beautiful, forgotten materials, breathing new life into them. These fabrics may have been set aside in favor of something new, but they still have beauty and potential. Through Kspek, I aim to give them a second life, creating unique, sustainable designs that make a positive impact on both fashion and the environment. All Kspek pieces are designed and cut by me. Sewing is either myself or my talented professional sewist friend in Briar, Washington.
